Boldr Review: A Surprising Product From a Micro-brand

In today’s watch market, there exist micro-brands that seem to sacrifice product quality just to make as much profit as possible, offering a low quality product at a high price. This is not the case with Boldr watches, although it is a relatively young micro-brand opened on Kickstarter that stands out for its excellent value for money and unique design. Its headquarters are located in Singapore.

In this article, we will review Boldr’s Field watches of watches to see if they are good value for money and explore whether they are worthy of becoming a new addition to your watch collection.

Unboxing Experience

The Boldr Field Watch comes with a dedicated carrying pouch and essential documentation. We appreciate this packaging approach for its practical value, making it more functional compared to traditional single-use watch boxes.

Size and Comfort

In terms of size, the watch has a diameter of 38 mm and a thickness of 12 mm. Due to the compact lug design, the lug-to-lug distance is only 44 mm (the official website states 42 mm, but the actual measurement is 44 mm). Despite the considerable thickness, the titanium case is much lighter than a stainless steel case of the same size, so the watch is still comfortable to wear.

Case Design

The watch is made of titanium and has the familiar bead-blasted finish that is a common feature of titanium watches.
This titanium case is not only practical, but its unique industrial style, square angles, fluted crown and steep lugs with a unique crown and lug design give the watch an industrial mechanical feel. It gives the watch a mechanical aesthetic.
In addition, the screw-down case back and crown ensure 200 meters of water resistance, which is enough to cope with all kinds of field environments, so you don’t need to worry about it whether you wear it on a daily basis or in water activities such as swimming. However, the crown can feel a bit rough when operated, although it has a good grip.

Dial and Hands

The dial features a classic design with standard numeral markers and a 24-hour sub-dial. Each hour marker and hand is accented with luminous dots, paired with luminous material on the numerals and hands, ensuring excellent visibility in low-light conditions. However, the specific composition of the Japanese luminous material used is not specified.

The hands are simple in design, with silver-toned syringe-style shapes filled with white lume. The orange second hand adds a unique touch and visual appeal to the watch. That said, a color more closely matching the case might have been a better choice. The map pattern on the dial contrasts well with the text, creating a clear and elegant layout that provides the legibility essential for an everyday watch.

Mirror and Strap

The dial is covered with a flat sapphire crystal glass, which provides the best anti-scratch protection and has an anti-reflective coating. As for the strap, the watches are equipped with NATO straps, which are of high quality, with strong stitching and durable materials. However, the double-layer fabric design makes the already thick watch even thicker, with a total thickness of 16.5 mm, and there will be obvious gaps at the lugs. Therefore, choosing another type of strap may be a better choice. It can not only solve the above problems, but also make the watch look smoother. It is worth mentioning that the titanium strap buckle and lug holders match the case perfectly, reflecting the brand’s attention to detail.

Movement

The watch is equipped with a 24-jewel 35A movement, which is very rare in watches of the same price. This movement is very popular among micro-brands, with high reliability, good accuracy, and stop-seconds and manual winding functions. Although the crown feels poor when winding, and the date function supported by the movement is not used in this watch, considering other excellent configurations, it is still a reasonable and good choice.

Conclusion

With a retail price of approximately £250, this watch impresses with its unique design, excellent specifications, and reasonable price point. Compared to similar field watches from traditional brands in the same price range, Boldr stands out in every aspect, showcasing the distinctive charm of a niche brand. In many ways, it surpasses comparable field watches from established brands at similar price levels.

We are delighted to see microbrands delivering unique and reasonably priced watches in the right way. If Boldr were to introduce a thinner case design, it could potentially elevate the watch to perfection.
